Public trust in government is approaching record lows: In 2020, according to Pew Research, only 20% of Americans said they trusted government institutions. As state governments take on the unprecedented task of vaccinating millions of constituents, rebuilding trust in government is mission critical – and data might be the key to doing so. The Commonwealth of Virginia has both recognized this and invested in this important goal.

Virginia Creates Website to Match Job Seekers with Openings

In the face of unprecedented unemployment, prior investments in digital operations and a data trust allowed the state, with data analytics company Qlarion, to fast-track a job referral website. More than 800,000 Virginians filed unemployment claims since state lockdowns started, officials with the Virginia Employment Commission told media on June 11. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has appointed Carlos Rivero, whose career has spanned academic institutions and federal agencies, as the state’s first-ever chief data officer. The move follows the passage of Virginia’s Senate Bill 580, the Government Data Collection and Dissemination Practices Act.
